Solidarity with political refugee, lawyer Gunay Dag

Solidarity with political refugees and solidarity with political prisoners are two issues very close to each other: A person that is restricted its basic rights, the right to movement and residence, is half a prisoner!

More and more political refugees and migrants in Europe are under repression, the danger of expulsions and restricted or taken their already gained right to asylum. So it is with lawyer of the People’s Law Office International in Greece, Gunay Dag. He has been on an indefinite hunger strike for over 45 days.

THE FOLLOWING IS AN “UPDATE FROM TODAY’S PROCEEDINGS AT THE GREEK ASYLUM AUTHORITY REGARDING HUNGER STRIKER PEOPLE’S LAWYER GÜNAY DAĞ FROM TURKEY”

Before the competent committee of the Asylum Appeals Authority of the Ministry of Migration and Asylum, recognized political refugee from Turkey Günay Dağ appeared with his lawyer to discuss his appeal against the unjustified revocation of his refugee status. His lawyer and he himself presented the reasons why his refugee status should be maintained, as the risk of persecution by Turkey persists, with him facing torture and prosecution if returned.

The committee reserved the right to call the appellant for an oral hearing, as provided by law, on a date to be determined in the coming days. Günay Dağ declared before the committee that he will continue his hunger strike until he is vindicated and this unjust decision—a result of collaboration between Greek and Turkish secret services—is overturned. This decision deprives him of the protection he is entitled to and had been granted by the Greek state. Today marks 47 days of his hunger strike.

A solidarity gathering took place in front of the Ministry, attended by lawyers, advocates, comrades and political refugees. All united until victory!
