INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY FOR POLITICAL PRISONERS (IS4PP)

URGENT CALL: LIFE DANGER for HUNGERSTRIKERS

THE LONG TERM HUNGER STRIKE RESISTANCE TO ISOLATION PRISONS IN TURKEY CONTINUES:

THIS IS A CALL TO EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO ACT CONSCIENTIOUSLY AND DEFEND THE LIFE OF PRISONERS IN STRUGGLE FOR THEIR RIGHTS AND JUST DEMANDS

READ THE CALL AND ACT AS QUICK AS YOU CAN TO AVOID DEATHS, MAKE THEIR VOICE HEARD, THEIR STRUGGLE VISIBLE!

We urge you to heed this warning and to take immediate action within the scope of your possibilities.

In Turkey, dozens of political prisoners have been forcibly transferred to so-called S and Y type pit-like prisons or high-security prisons over the last two years. There, prisoners are arbitrarily and unlawfully subjected to systematic isolation, which is classified as torture under international law.

23 hours a day alone in a small, unhygienic cell, without sufficient air and sunlight.

This detention regime is not a temporary disciplinary measure, but a form of maximum punishment over a long period of time—with the aim of physically and psychologically destruction of the individual (politically hostile persons).

In response to this widespread, systematic practice of torture, political prisoners have decided to go on an indefinite hunger strike, with two of them even resorting to a death fast.

You may have already heard about this, although it is shocking that it is not being reported in the international media.

In Turkey, human rights organisations, members of parliament and lawyers’ associations have already spoken out clearly, condemning this method of detention as death row. Press conferences and small protests have been and continue to be held on this issue, mostly with repressive consequences for those involved, and critical newspaper articles have been published about the devastating condition of the prisoners.

The prisoners are not alone in their demand that the Turkish judiciary immediately transfer them back to normal prisons and put an end to this torture of isolation.

However, given the pressure and repression currently being exerted on the entire political opposition in Turkey, this is not enough.

Much more international pressure and publicity is needed to stop this crime in prisons, which the Turkish government wants to introduce as normal practice.

At this moment, three of the twelve prisoners currently on indefinite hunger strike/death fast are in a very critical condition, two of them are in acute danger of death…

FIKRET AKAR HAS BEEN ON AN INDEFINITE HUNGER STRIKE FOR 205 DAYS (as of today, 20 October).

He is being held in Karatepe High Security Prison in Çorlu.

He has been reduced to skin and bones, is in extreme pain, his body can barely absorb sugar, which is his only source of energy, and his strength is almost gone.

Immediate action must be taken and his demand to be transferred out of this ‘prison’ must be accepted and carried out immediately so that he can survive!

To this end, it is very important that you write to the prison and the Turkish Ministry of Justice and support this demand.

It could save his life!

In this moment it is possible also that Fikret is captured to hospital with the purpose of force feeding. Also in this case, his life as well as his physical and psychological integrity would be in danger.

Ministry of Justice of Turkey, Mr Yilmaz Tunç

Karatepe High Security Prison

SERKAN ONUR YILMAZ HAS BEEN ON A DEATH FAST FOR 344 DAYS (as of today, 20 October).

He is no longer in a high-security (isolation) prison because he was able to secure his transfer from the Antalya high-security prison. He is currently kept at Bolu F-type prison. And he is continuing his death fast so that his eight former fellow prisoners will also be freed from this terrible prison system and transferred to another prison.

Serkan Onur Yilmaz no longer has the strength to stand up. He has been suffering from breathing difficulties, severe muscle cramps and pain for some time and is therefore unable to sleep.

How much longer can he endure this?

In his case, too, it is imperative to write to the Turkish judicial authorities and hold them accountable.

Ministry of Justice of Turkey, Mr Yilmaz Tunç

You can use as subject in your emails to the Ministry of Justice:

“Serkan Onur Yılmaz, Ayberk Demirdöğen, Fikret Akar’ın taleplerini kabul edin!”

(translated: Accept the demands of Serkan Onur Yilmaz,  Ayberk Demirdögen and Fikret Akar)

Punishing prisoners with this unlawful, arbitrary measure and then allowing them to die in agony because they (and every other human being) cannot endure this isolation in the long term and therefore seek justice through hunger strikes cannot and must not be permitted.

We ask you all to

stand up for the lives of these prisoners NOW and, in a broader sense, for all others who will follow them and who face the same fate because they are fighting for a dignified life and respect for human rights in their country.

There is also a petition waiting for many more signatures:

Thank you for every voice!

Please let us know that you support them!
