INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY FOR POLITICAL PRISONERS (IS4PP)

FIKRET AKAR’S DEMAND WAS ACCEPTED ON DAY 245 OF HIS HUNGERSTRIKE

Fikret Akar’s demand to be transferred from a ‘pit-like’ isolation prison, where he had been on hunger strike for 245 days, was accepted.

Today, the political prisoner Fikret Akar was transferred from Çorlu-Karatepe High Security Prison to Tekirdağ Type F Prison No 2.

His transfer is another victory in the long-lasting ongoing resistance of political prisoners to the unlawful, inhuman and unacceptable isolation prison conditions in High Security Prisons of type S and Y in Turkey.

In recent weeks, his situation has deteriorated dramatically and the worst had to be expected. Most recently, Fikret Akar had expressed his acute fear of being force-fed. He also indicated that he would rather die than be force-fed.

Only a few days ago, Serkan Onur Yilmaz has paused his resistance after 375 days hungerstrike. His resistance had already been victorious, since he had been granted his demand to be transferred from Antalya High Security Prison on the 213rd day of his hunger strike. But he extended this resistance for the transfer of his friends, who were still kept in Antalya. His struggle has been a victory as a whole, because he risked his life and health for other prisoners in isolation and showed that his demand to end isolation tyranny should apply to all prisoners.

After these two new victories, our attention should now turn to Ayberk Demirdögen and other prisoners who have been on a hunger strike for a long time and whose situation has become very critical.

Long live the Resistance and International Solidarity!

Pit-type isolation prisons should be closed! Isolation is Torture!
