Despite many warnings and calls from hundreds of people in different countries, the Turkish authorities, under the new Justice Minister, Akin Gürlek — notorious for his politically motivated investigations against opposition forces when he was Istanbul Chief Prosecutor — committed the crime of forcing medical intervention on a prisoner on hunger strike.

The simple demand of the hunger strikers for far over 200 days was to be transfered to a prison with human conditions. They prefered a measure which is accepted as torture by international medical rules, instead of respecting their human rights. “I’m at the hospital right now. I had regular lawyer consultations with Hüseyin Özen and Tahsin Sağaltıcı. Hüseyin Özen’s condition is fine, progressing normally, but Tahsin’s condition is very bad. They cut off water and sugar this morning. Neither of them knows about Gürkan’s condition; they asked, and I said he was fine, not wanting to tell them. Afterwards, I went up to the intensive care unit with Gürkan’s mother. We spoke with Gürkan and the doctor and his assistants who performed the intervention. The doctor said that this was the first time something like this had happened to him and that he didn’t know exactly what the legal procedure was or what to do. He said that the intervention was performed after Gürkan lost consciousness and that he was using a B vitamin complex. He also said they gave him electrodes to help him regain consciousness.
