COMRADE IÑAKI BILBAO (TXIKITO) IS ON A DRY HUNGER STRIKE

Iñaki Bilbao (Txikito), who has already endured 42 years of imprisonment, making him the longest-serving political prisoner in Europe, has begun a new dry hunger strike from the isolation wing to which he has been transferred.

Following several incidents months ago, when Txikito hung a Cuban flag and the Basque ikurriña from the window of his cell, the mistreatment of the prisoner has continued throughout these months. After being transferred to isolation last week, he first cut off all contact with the outside world (refusing to go to the yard, make phone calls, or receive visits), and has now taken this extreme measure.

The guards were not content with isolating him; they also withheld his clothing and other personal belongings. When, eventually, one of the inmates collected his clothes so they could be transferred to the isolation wing, the officials chose to provide him with only a few items. Most seriously, they failed to provide his daily medication, despite knowing that Txikito is suffering from prostate cancer.

It was as a result of these events that Txikito decided to begin a dry hunger strike, in protest against the treatment being inflicted upon him at Zaballa prison.

A DRY HUNGER STRIKE is the most dangerous form of hunger strike, and the life of the person undertaking it can be placed in immediate danger within hours. In hot weather, life-threatening dehydration can develop within 24–48 hours.
